think before you jump in | good decisions start with a good foundation

Here's some great advice.

• Avoid online sites and forums where people bicker, attack one another, and act in unprofessional ways. That shows a serious disregard for our art and the inherent brotherhood that has allowed martial arts styles to survive for hundreds of years. And changes are, the person on the other end causing trouble really doesn't know very much anyway; everyone on the internet claims to be an expert. it's much better to learn from serious amateurs and seasoned professionals who not only work together like we do, but care about you and our art enough to take the time to guide you and provide you with proper advice and leadership.
• Go to the library and check out every book you can find on martial arts; the more you know about other styles and our collective history, the more you can put to use. Books and videos can't take the place of a qualified instructor, but they certainly can and do help. So go through them. Study them. Absorb the material they provide inside. Realize that there are all kinds of directions you can take that will add to your over-all ability. You'll need to decide what interests you the most and then begin pursuing that kind of training. In our case, we've alwys been freestyle fighters. That is, before the term MMA existed, we did the same thing -- we used, as Bruce Lee put it, what was useful. Once you have a good idea of what kind of training excites you and fits into your personality, goals, and interests, you'll have a much better handle on what kind of lessons to invest in your time, energy, and finances into. Too many new fighters buy everything up they can, don't do that. Be patient. Get what's right for you, and not just because you see a nice demo of the effect, hear about a name, or are given a great sales pitch.
• Join our Forum. We're not about having lots and lots of members, we're about having good members. To us it is about quality. What we always look for are members that are open and honest about who they are and what they have to offer each other in a safe and professional enviorment designed to encourage, enable, and assist.
• Buy some periodicals and see what's going on; there are a lot of magazines out there to check out. They often offer lots of great advice.
• When you're ready, check out our products. We may have something that fits into your particular needs from our videos to training equipment. And if not, ask our advice and we'll tell you where you can go to get the most for you buck.
